MemeOver FAQ
What is MemeOver?
MemeOver is an open-source Discord overlay that sends images, GIFs, videos, audio clips, reactions and short text from a Discord channel to connected desktop screens.
Is MemeOver inspired by Cacabox's LiveChat?
Yes, MemeOver is an independent project inspired by their LiveChat. The original LiveChat ran through OBS and was built for streamers; MemeOver is a standalone app, so no stream is needed: the overlay appears directly on each participant's screen.
Do all friends need the desktop app?
Yes. Each friend who wants to see media on their screen installs the desktop app, while the shared Discord server uses the MemeOver bot to receive media.
Can I control where media appears?
Yes. MemeOver includes placement, size, opacity, duration, sound, profiles, history and replay controls so each person can tune the overlay for their own setup.
Can I host the bot myself?
Yes. Use the desktop app’s Server tab to install and run your own instance, or follow the Docker guide.
Can I send a meme anonymously?
Use /memeover secret. The overlay hides the author badge; this is not anonymity from Discord or the bot operator.
Is MemeOver built with AI?
Partly. The project started in June 2024 without AI and went through many different approaches: a Go bot, an Electron overlay later replaced by Tauri, then a bot rewritten in TypeScript with Bun. The product already existed when I started using AI. It simply helped me add new features and consolidate the product.
